Mason Recreation oversees three facilities on the Fairfax campus of George Mason University including the Recreation Athletic Complex (RAC), the Aquatic Fitness Center (AFC), and Skyline fitness center. These facilities boast four gymnasiums, racquetball/ squash courts, several locker rooms, fitness galleries and dedicated rooms for yoga, cycling, group exercise, and marital arts/ self-defense classes. We house and maintain a recreation and competition pool, sauna, whirlpool, and several exterior facilities including a pavilion, turf and grass fields, jogging/ walking trails, and a team challenge course on our Science and Technology Campus. We provide the following programs and services for the campus community: Fitness, Aquatics, Outdoor Adventures, Intramural Sports, Club Sports, the EDGE (team building programming), as well as a Summer Youth Camp.
Responsible for everyday operational tasks at the pools in the Aquatic and Fitness Center under the supervision and direction of the Aquatic Director, Aquatic and Safety Coordinator, or Head Lifeguard. Responsible for lifeguarding, participant safety, maintaining skills, and working at various aquatic facilities as needed.
Responsibilities include but not limited to:
Lifeguarding, scanning assigned zone of protection, rule enforcement, and proper rotation. Providing safety assistance, rescues, emergency actions, and first aid when necessary according to Mason Recreation, designated aquatic risk management, and lifeguarding entity's training and protocol;
Monitors participants and users of the facility;
Provides the highest attention to safety for participants, self, and fellow employees;
Follows all established protocol for biohazard materials;
Reports to work well-rested and physically able to perform lifeguard duties;
Follows all aquatic facility rules and protects self from harm;
Immediately reports any hazardous conditions to supervisor including inability to properly scan zone due to weather or other conditions;
Will maintain minimum number of in-service hours required by Mason Recreation, and meet minimum standards for both independent and internal performance audits;
Will clean and police grounds, pool deck, and bath house facilities;
May assist with accident reports, chemical level testing and reporting, answering phones, communicating with the public, facility inspections, and pool vacuuming;
May assist with teaching, coaching or assisting with lessons, swim team, and other programs and special events at location in accordance with the designated swim lesson and water adjustment program guidelines and protocol;
Provides for the supervision and safe operation of all aquatic programs based on Mason Recreation, and designated aquatic risk management, and lifeguarding entity's training and protocol;
May be responsible for answering phones and communicating with public;
Assists with maintaining clean facility, grounds, deck, and bath houses;
May assist with water testing, third-party accident reports, program registration and class lists, and swim lesson records; and
Will at all times adhere to department policy and procedure at aquatic location.
The list of duties and responsibilities is not intended to be all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties or responsibilities that management may deem necessary from time-to-time.
Active and valid American Red Cross (or similar) Lifeguard/CPR/AED/First Aid Certification required;
Ability to communicate effectively; customer service and people-oriented; and ability to follow established procedures, policies and protocol.
Independent Judgment: Established policies and procedures to control actions. Independent judgment is utilized when there are no available policies and procedures; errors in judgment may cause serious risk and significant liability. Required to exercise good judgment in the areas of aquatic safety. This position will require an individual who is able to make quick, concise and correct decisions that may affect the health, safety and well-being of pool patrons and staff. This position will work under the supervision of the Aquatic Director, Aquatic and Safety Coordinator, or Head Lifeguard.
Working Conditions: Lifeguards are assigned to the aquatic facility as a primary work location in a standard aquatic facility environment including pool deck, pool, and locker rooms. Work hours will include mornings, evening, holidays, and weekends. The incumbent will be expected to travel to various locations on occasion for work-related activities or training.
Salary: $10.50 per hour
