Department/College Description The mission of the Center for Recreational Sports is to promote and develop healthy lifestyles, social interaction, leadership skills and sportsmanship by providing innovative recreational programs, services, facilities and employment opportunities that are outcomes based, comprehensive, inclusive and of the highest quality.
Hire, train, supervise and evaluate the Aquatics student staff (lifeguards and learn to swim instructors) throughout the year.
Responsible for American Red Cross First Aid, CPR, AED, Lifeguarding teaching, training, certification and records retention for all CRS student and professional staff.
Responsible for Blood Borne Pathogen training, certification and records retention for all CRS student and professional staff.
Create, revise, and implement a comprehensive risk management plan for the aquatic program that includes staff training, certification requirements, program management, regular audits, emergency actions plans, and appropriate documentation.
Oversee and coordinate safety inspections and audits from the County and State in conjunction with University Arenas staff.
Develop, coordinate and implement formal and informal aquatics programming, including learn-to-swim, aquatic certification courses, lap swimming and recreational aquatic activities.
Review and coordinate all aquatics programs, including Wellness Ed courses, and reservations from a safety, staffing and feasibility standpoint.
Develop, coordinate and implement Aquatics Intramural offerings with the support of the Assistant Director for Intramurals.
Wellness Course Instruction
Teach a minimum of two classes per semester in Wellness Education Aquatics and Health and Safety curriculum.
Resolve any customer service related issues in a timely manner.
Determine facility openings and closures based on established health and safety criteria
Pool Chemistry: Monitor the daily pool chemical readings and work closely with the CPO and University Arenas staff to adjust as needed.
Pool Maintenance: Partner with University Arenas staff to order pool chemicals and facility supplies and to coordinate daily and annual facility maintenance.
Equipment Management: Inspect and maintain an organized pool deck area and storage rooms. Inventory recreation aquatics equipment. Responsible for the purchase of new aquatic recreation equipment and supplies.
Maintain appropriate certifications required for the aquatics center management (CPR Pro, First Aid, AED, Lifeguarding Instructor and CPO).
Required Minimum Qualifications
Bachelors degree (Recreation Sports Management, Athletic Administration or related field)
Other: American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor Certification, American Red Cross First Aid, CPR, AED Instructor Certification, Certified Pool/Spa Operator
3-5 Years of experience in aquatics management and staff supervision
Excellent knowledge of swimming techniques, strokes and training protocols
Excellent knowledge of pool water quality chemistry
Strong leadership skills
Effective interpersonal, written and electronic communications skills
Ability to convey complex information with diverse audiences, including students with physical or other disabilities
Ability to establish, build and maintain effective working relationships with diverse groups
Ability to manage and maintain confidential and private information
Participate in professional development activities pertinent to the role
Computer proficiency using Microsoft Office and enterprise systems in support of functions
Masters degree in Recreation Sports Management, Athletic Administration or related field
American Red Cross WSI certification
3-5 Years of experience as a lifeguard
