The Federal Work Study Assistant | Lifeguard is responsible for supervision of the PVAMU Recreation Center pool and aids the Department of Recreational Sports in delivering an enjoyable experience for the Prairie View Community. The Lifeguard staff provides excellent customer service to members and guests at the PVAMU Pool.
Supervision of the six lane PVAMU Recreation Center Pool and deck during open recreation and swimming lessons
Demonstrate working knowledge of PVAMU Pool and Recreational Sports rules and regulations; Ability and willingness to enforce rules and regulations
Coordination of opening/closing procedures, hourly pool counts, and all other daily operations
Assisting in regular cleaning of the PVAMU Pool, patio and deck area
Attending weekly In-service Trainings and remain up to date on all American Red Cross Lifeguard/CPR skills
Providing emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services
All other tasks assigned by the Coordinator of Aquatics and Student Coordinator
Required Education and Experience:
Presently enrolled for at least nine (9) graduate or six (6) undergraduate semester credit hours during the term in which the work is to be done.
Must be in academic good standing (SAP) as demonstrated through your college; minimum 2.0 GPA
No prior experience necessary
For work eligibility during a summer term, a student must be enrolled for at least six (6) graduate or undergraduate semester credit hours during the term in which the work is to be done or preregistered at least six (6) undergraduate semester hours or nine (9) graduate semester hours for the upcoming fall term.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to swim 300 meters continuously
Able to tread water for two minutes using only your legs
Able to swim 20 yards using Front Crawl or Breaststroke, surface dive 13 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to surface, and swim 20 yards back to the starting block with the object, using only legs to swim within 1 minute and 40 seconds
Previous experience lifeguarding preferred
Current Lifeguard/CPR/AED Certification through American Red Cross
Lifeguard must pass a physical skills test before being hired
Lifeguard will be expected to work between 8-17 hours per week
Lifeguard staff will be expected to pass a staff assessment which reviews all essential duties and responsibilities. Assessments will be provided by the Head guard and/or the Coordinator of Aquatics
