Essential Job Duties:
This position will develop a research and extension program on emerging diseases and pathogens related to Food Security and Ocean Health, and serve as the Director of the NC State University Shellfish Disease and Pathology Program based at NC State's Center for Marine Sciences and Technology (CMAST) in Morehead City, North Carolina. The Assistant Professor position will have a primary appointment in the College of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Clinical Sciences, and will be expected to foster development of integrated programs within NCSU and to build strong community partnerships with other state, federal and private nonprofit organizations.
North Carolina has a rich history involving shellfish and continues to invest considerably in efforts to restore and maintain shellfish resources. In addition, shellfish aquaculture represents a growing industry in the state with great potential for development due to North Carolina's expansive coastal resources. The applicant will be expected to work directly with and support the needs of stakeholders within the state, region, and nationally by establishing and heading the NC State University Shellfish Disease and Pathology Program. In addition to providing disease diagnostic services including health certification, the applicant is expected to strengthen research capacity in the field of shellfish disease and to provide leadership at the national and international level regarding shellfish health in commercial aquaculture, habitat restoration, and in response to environmental changes and perturbations.
The position will be expected to mentor graduate and undergraduate students in research with limited teaching responsibilities. This work will elevate our research reputation in aquatic food supply and food security based on expected state and national policy changes to increase domestic aquaculture production capacity. The position is expected to actively seek external funding through grants from state and national programs as well as contracts with trade associations and industry partnerships.
This position will require routine travel for meeting with industry stakeholders, consultation with colleagues at the NCSU Raleigh campus or other locations, and to conduct research. The successful applicant must independently be able to travel from location to location without reliance on others.
The position will work closely with the North Carolina Sea Grant Marine Aquaculture Specialist based at CMAST to establish and maintain a joint research and outreach program to address the needs of the state's growing shellfish aquaculture industry. The position is expected to interact as appropriate with the following campus-related research stations: Marine Aquaculture Research Center, Pamlico Aquaculture Field Laboratory, and the Mountain Horticulture Crops Research and Extension Center. Additional interactions are expected with UNC-Wilmington marine aquaculture programs, UNC-Institute of Marine Sciences zoonotic marine pathogens programs, the NOAA Beaufort Laboratory, NC Division of Marine Fisheries Shellfish Sanitation and Recreational Water Quality Section, and other coastal marine laboratories.

Requires doctor’s degree, an equivalent degree, or equivalent professional experience.
Demonstrated competencies in oral and written communications as well as interpersonal skills.
Expertise and experience in shellfish disease diagnostics, including culture, microscopy, and molecular methods pathogen detection.
Experience with health certification of shellfish.
Experience with shellfish mariculture procedures and operations
An established record of publications and funding.
Expertise and experience in laboratory and/or field research on technical issues related to shellfish health and disease.
Demonstrated skills in public presentations, communications, and organizational teamwork and leadership.
Required license or certification:
