Berkeley Lab's Environmental Genomics & Systems Biology Division has an opening for a Microbial Systems Group Postdoctoral Scholar. The incumbent will work as part of the Microbial Systems Group investigating metabolic pathways and microbe-microbe interactions in contaminant-degrading microbial communities using biochemical and sequence-based methods. Experimental responsibilities include collecting field samples, designing and maintaining microcosms, chemical analysis and nucleic acid extraction. Computational responsibilities include analyzing and interpreting metagenome and metatranscriptome sequence data and metadata with a variety of standard or custom tools. You will store and organize results for presentation and viewing by internal and external project team members and the wider scientific community and prepare results for publication in scientific journals. Position reports to Microbial Systems Group lead.
What You Will Do:
Work with partners in Earth and Environmental Sciences to collect produced water samples from hydrocarbon extraction operations and set up aerobic and anaerobic microcosms to monitor contaminant degradation and microbial community dynamics.
Work with JGI staff and collaborators to obtain microbial community data including shotgun metagenome and metatranscriptome sequence data using Illumina, Pacific Biosciences and possibly other sequencing technologies.
Employ internal and external software and web-based analysis tools for processing and analyzing collected data.
Store and organize results for presentation and viewing by JGI collaborators and the wider scientific community.
Interact with internal and external collaborators to ensure efficient communication and completion of analysis projects.
Document group analysis procedures and methods for reference.
Write results up for publication.
Present research at both internal and external forums.
Additional Responsibilities as needed:
Attend and present technical status reports at group meetings.
What is Required:
Ph.D. in life sciences or related field with some relevant research experience in both molecular biology and microbiology.
Strong background in molecular biology and genomics.
Experience with: statistics, databases of genomic information, and methods of analysis of biological sequence data; in particular, familiarity with the Integrated Microbial Genomes database, the R software suite and QIIME amplicon analysis software are valuable.
Experience using PC, Mac and/or UNIX operating systems.
Experience with nucleic acid isolation, protocol optimization, bacterial growth assays, and sterile technique.
Strong organizational and record keeping skills to record experiment results and analyze data.
Effective oral and written communication skills to present findings at group meetings and conferences, and to publish results.
Ability to interact with a variety of technical and scientific personnel including Research Associates, Scientists and Software Engineers.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Background in hydrocarbon and/or aquatic microbiology.
Experience with analysis of next-gen sequence data, particularly shotgun metagenome data.
Experience with programming and/or data science.
Experience with growth of anaerobic microorganisms.

This is a full time, 2 years, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
