Essential Job Duties:
The Research Associate will engage in original research in the area of aquacultural and coastal bioengineering. This position will independently support, develop, design and execute research activities in the Department, with special focus on the Marine Aquaculture Research Center (MARC). This position will travel to support work both at BAE (Raleigh) and at the MARC facility (Marshallberg, NC); and to relevant field sites.
Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
Conduct engineering related research on RAS and open water systems
Perform physical tests on aquaculture systems in order to model and optimize them
Apply engineering principles to aquaculture systems
Develop engineering criteria for aquaculture systems to assist extension services
Assist in developing proposals for future work
Assist in preparing research and extension publications to summarize findings.
The Research Associate will also assist in existing and future collaboration with local farmers, National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Center for Marine Sciences and Technology (CMAST), NC Sea Grant, state regulatory agencies, and non-profit organizations. While interacting with biologists, engineers, regulatory personnel, community members, and aquaculture producers; this position will perform high level engineering design and experimental protocols The position will analyze, summarize, and present research data results in scientific publications, present research findings at meetings and conferences. The position must remain abreast with scientific progress in aquacultural and coastal bioengineering and perform the necessary novel experiments to stay ahead of the research. The Research Associate may assist or supervise laboratory and field data collection and/or equipment installation in support of research projects.

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree, or relevant Bachelor’s degree plus 3 or more years of independent research experience. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Must possess good organizational skills and be detail oriented.
Ability to work with minimal supervision.
Ability to work independently as well as be part of a team.
Must be willing and able to travel to engage in research (Raleigh, MARC and other field sites as appropriate).
Must have strong communication skills, including speaking to practical and technical clients; and writing grants, technical (peer reviewed) and practical publications.
Master’s degree in biological and agricultural engineering, environmental engineering, aquacultural engineering, coastal engineering or a closely related discipline and two or more years related experience.
Knowledge of coastal dynamics, water quality, nutrient cycling in aquatic systems, and unit processes in recirculating aquaculture systems. Knowledge of aquatic species such as oysters, striped bass, mussels and algae is desirable. Willingness to learn more about these species and apply engineering principles to research and development is essential.
Supervisory and project management experience desired. The ideal candidate should be able to participate in multidisciplinary initiatives that include engineers, biologists, ecologists, planners, and economists to support the mission of BAE and MARC. Experience relating engineering criteria to biological systems is preferred. Ability to perform numerical modeling of wave transformations, wave-structure interaction, tidal currents, and particle tracking in the coastal environment are important. Programming ability in MatLab, R, C++, Python, and/or Fortran are highly desired. Professional experience and a professional engineering license are desirable, but not required. Success at the Fundamentals of Engineering examination or Professional Engineers license desired.
Required license or certification:
This position is required to travel frequently to carry out the functions of the position. Specifically travel to coastal areas and between BAE and the MARC facility will be required. A valid NC driver’s license is required for this position and must be obtained within 60 days of hire date and maintained as a condition of employment.
