Essential Job Duties:
This position will conduct aquatic and non-cropland weed science research and extension activities. The incumbent will be expected to provide leadership to stakeholders on water resource issues and liaison with government agencies to improve management programs. Develop, design, and conduct creative research activities. The incumbent will write grant proposals to fund research and extension activities and deliver research results to managers through effective extension activities. The incumbent will also author or co-author peer reviewed publications.
Travel is required, including occasional overnight and weekend travel.
Build alliances and work in partnership with state and federal agencies, the public, local elected and appointed officials to improve aquatic plant management programs.
Provide educational programming to stakeholders on aquatic invasive weeds.
Supervise graduate student research projects.
Provide service to relevant professional societies.
Write reports to funding agencies.
Relevant Ph.D degree (or relevant terminal degree), or relevant Master’s degree with at least 5 years of formal post-degree professional work experience. In rare instances, an individual with a comparable professional experience but less than a master’s degree, plus 8 years of exceptional relevant professional experience. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Knowledge of aquatic resources including aquatic plants and aquatic plant management.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work independently or in collaboration with a group on aquatic sites.
Ability to interact with stakeholders of divergent opinions to facilitate compromise solutions based on the best available scientific data.
Ability to publish research in peer reviewed journals.
Must have the ability to operate a boat.
PhD degree plus at least 5 years experience related to aquatic plants and/or a closely related field of study.
Ability to identify common aquatic plant species.
Experience with aquatic plant management research methods.
Required license or certification:
A valid drivers license is required for travel. NC drivers license required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
NC pesticide license or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
Boat license or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
GIS certification or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
