The Office of Academic Affairs , University Recreation and Fitness (URecFit) has an opportunity for an Assistant Director, Aquatics and Safety Education in the SMC Campus Center. URecFit is committed to enriching the academic experience as well as encouraging the physical, mindful, cultural, spiritual, emotional, and social development of the UMB community. This position develops, enhances and guides aquatics operations and programs.
The Assistant Director of Aquatics and Safety Education assists the Sr. Assistant Director of URecFit Operations in administrating all aspects of the campus aquatics center, which includes providing strategic direction and leadership to the campus aquatics center through the development, delivery, administration and guidance of operations, aquatic facility management and programming. This position is responsible for coordinating the design, scheduling, implementation, and evaluation of aquatic exercise programs, learn to swim program and aquatic staff. The Assistant Director of Aquatics assists in collaborations with upper level administrators and other directors within the business unit and throughout the campus in order to ensure the effective and efficient operation of the aquatic center as well as the achievement of financial objectives.

Directly responsible for the day-to-day operations and oversight of the URecFit indoor pool and aquatic programs.
Develops, markets, oversees, and assesses participant focused programming through the creation and implementation of special events, aquatic fitness classes, aquatic wellbeing programming, and a comprehensive swim lesson program that serves both youth and adults.
Responsible for hiring, training, developing, managing, and evaluating employee and student staff of the aquatic center. This includes lifeguards, pool operators, swim instructors, aquatic group exercise instructors and other related staff.
Create, revise, and implement a comprehensive risk management plan for aquatic programs that includes staff training, certification requirements, program management, regular audits, monthly in service training, emergency action plans, and appropriate documentation to ensure compliance.
Schedules and coordinates the maintenance and care of the aquatics facility and equipment in collaboration with the Senior Assistant Director of Operations.
Assist with the scheduling of aquatic facility, including internal programming and rentals.
Develops promotional material and publications for the programs and department.
Oversee the enforcement of administrative and operational policies and procedures. Develop and maintain accurate records, and annual reports.
Oversee the annual budget for aquatic programming and operations and project operational needs.
Helps plan, implement, and evaluate departmental and campus wide special events. Assist in collaborative programs with other units within Academic Affairs.
Assist in developing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluation of departmental policies and procedures.
Proactively represents the department through participation in campus meetings and special projects, as well as UMB on an external basis with USM headquarters and other system-wide units.
Performs other duties as assigned
Education: Bachelors in related field to include Exercise Sciences, Recreation, Sports Management, Project Management, Fitness Management, Kinesiology, Health Education, Management Sciences, Student Personnel Administration, Higher Education Administration, Business Administration, or closely related field. Master's degree preferred.
Experience: Three ( 3) years of progressively working in aquatics centers, recreation centers, or appropriate field. E xperience working with college students or in a higher education environment is preferred.
Supervision: Two (2) years of direct supervision of aquatics employees and swim instructors.
Licensure/Certification: None required during the hiring process.
The successful candidate must have the following certifications within the first 90 days of employment:
CPR and AED certification.
American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor and Water Safety Instructor.
Certified Pool Operator, Aquatic Facility Operator or similar pool operator certification.
Preferred: Nationally recognized certifications in aquatic group exercise.
Other: Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
