The candidate will be directly engaged, under scientific supervision, to assist with field and laboratory studies investigating the buoyancy and sinking rates of HABS and other competitive phytoplankton as a function of colony size and growth rates. Results will be used in our HAB forecasting models and for writing manuscripts. Responsibilities include:
Participate in field and laboratory studies of harmful algal blooms including field sampling, sample processing, and laboratory analyses.
Conduct video-graphic analyses of buoyancy and sinking rates of HABs and competitive phytoplankton as a function of size and growth rates.
Process and analyze current and past experiments results to produce a database that can be incorporated into our HAB forecasting models.
Assist in processing and preparation of DNA extracts for qPCR analysis.
Assist in the preparation of manuscripts based on the experimental results and CIGLR-GLERL harmful algal bloom monitoring data in Lake Erie and Saginaw Bay, Lake Huron.
A Baster's Degree in ecology, limnology, oceanography, or aquatic environmental science from an accredited university.
1 to 2 years of experience working in a research laboratory focused on studying harmful algal blooms in the Great Lakes.
Experience with field work on research vessels in Great Lakes or large bodies of water under various weather conditions.
Experience with using in situ water quality instruments.
Experience in data analysis using Excel, R, or other statistical packages.
Experience with DNA extraction and running qPCR.
Strong communication skills, including a demonstrated ability to work both in a team environment and independently.
A Master's Degree in ecology, limnology, oceanography, or aquatic environmental science from an accredited university.
A strong record of scientific publication and conference participation.
Willingness to travel for field work or training.
Experience isolating and culturing freshwater cyanobacteria.
The position is a one-year term-limited position, with the possibility of extension based on performance, need and funding. This position will be funded and administered through the Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research (CIGLR) and will be located at the NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab (GLERL) in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
