Posting Summary: The Department of Intramural-Recreational Sports, a Division of University of Virginia Athletics, is seeking applicants for a Pool Technician. As an integral member of Intramural-Recreational Sports, the Pool Technician supports our mission of serving the University community through first-class recreational engagement that fosters wellness, impacts lives and generates life-long memories.
The employee in this position ensures safe, well-maintained, and clean natatorium spaces at the UVA Aquatic & Fitness Center and North Grounds Recreation Center supporting efficient, effective, unified operations. Responsibilities include monitoring and maintaining comprehensive cleanliness and sanitation of the pool deck, tile, pool drains, all surfaces, fixtures, furnishings, equipment, pool basins, etc. As a member of the Pool Technician and Aquatics Management team, the Pool Technician supports maintaining pool water quality and associated mechanical/filtration/chemical systems to ensure cleanliness, sanitation, and safety standards including preventive and routine maintenance tasks. In all responsibilities, professionally represents Intramural-Recreational Sports and the University of Virginia positively engaging and communicating with natatorium participants (e.g., students, UVA faculty/staff, youth swim lesson participants, and Varsity Swim/Dive team coaches, student-athletes, and team operations staff.
The Pool Technician will work independently and self-directed as well as in a collaborative, team environment. Responsibilities require the ability to perform routine, daily manual labor including some heavy lifting.
Base hours are typically day shift Monday-Friday, with primary work locations at the Aquatics & Fitness Center and North Grounds Recreation Center. Based on business needs, schedule will vary to accommodate special event demands, deep cleaning, repair or maintenance work, or late night projects.
Required Minimum Level of Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent Required
Preferred Minimum Level of Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent Preferred
Required Minimum Level of Experience: Some - up to 4 years
Required Specific Experience: Require ANY of the following: *Hands on experience maintaining buildings and systems. *Hands on experience maintaining cleanliness and proper sanitation of building spaces possibly including aquatics/natatorium environments.
Preferred Minimum Level of Experience: Considerable - 4 to 7 years
Preferred Specific Experience: Prefer ANY of the following: *Experience maintaining mechanical/filtration/chemical systems, pumps, motors, etc. in aquatics/natatorium environment. *Experience cleaning and maintaining natatorium spaces and associated equipment *Experience maintaining full service recreation/fitness center facilities, fixtures, furnishings, and equipment.
Preferred License or Certification: Certified Pool Operator(CPO) and/or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO)
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Require ANY of the following: *Ability to develop and implement preventive, routine, and deferred maintenance plan for spaces and equipment. *Knowledge and hands-on experience inspecting, repairing and maintaining mechanical/filtration/chemical systems. *Knowledge and hands-on experience cleaning and maintaining building spaces and equipment. *Ability to work independently in self-directed manner as well as in a collaborative, team environment, prioritizing workday demands. *Ability to complete hands-on maintenance and cleaning tasks using appropriate tools (e.g., power tools, hand tools, voltage meters, water chemical testing kits, etc.), equipment (e.g., (industrial floor scrubber, power washer, pool vacuum), and chemicals (e.g., chlorine, CO2, ammonia, etc.).
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Prefer ANY of the following: *Plumbing, electrical, water treatment knowledge. *Ability to keep detailed records and logs. *Ability to engage and communicate with customers in a positive, professional manner. *Ability to identify maintenance issues outside expertise and work with other Intramural-Recreational Sports staff, Facilities Management, and external contractors ensuring work is performed properly and in the best interest of the department. *Knowledge of swim meet management equipment.
