This Aquaculture Specialist II will be responsible for:
Coordinating the activities of laboratory technicians, graduate students, and post-doctoral fellows in the zebrafish facilities, ensuring that standard operating procedures are followed, and laboratory facilities are effectively utilized. Communicating facility-related news, deadlines, policy changes in person and via email to all users.
Operating, maintaining and troubleshooting sophisticated recirculating aquaculture systems, as well as aquatics tank washers, feeding robots, and integrated electronic water quality monitoring systems, all observing standard operating procedures and safety guidelines. Coordinating service to units, if required.
Troubleshooting animal health and welfare issues and communicating them to ARP Manager.
Performing various husbandry tasks, including spawning, in-vitro fertilization, and numerous other procedures that involve the handing of fish. Developing new and more efficient techniques based on experience and collection of data.
Overseeing the operation of live invertebrate cultures, nurseries, and experimental areas.
Overseeing all water quality testing; implementing troubleshooting approaches when values move out of desired ranges, communicating them to ARP Manager.
Providing orientation training and ongoing assistance and training with fish and aquaculture systems to scientific staff. Providing training to part-time and full time Aquaculture Specialist Is, as well as aquaculture interns.
Attending conferences and courses, consults with other researchers, and participating in other professional activities to maintain the level of continuing education that will provide information to supplement existing procedures.
Ensuring compliance with safety procedures for the handling, storage and disposal of flammable, corrosive, toxic and radioactive substances.
Maintaining inventories of consumable supplies and equipment.
To qualify, you must have:
The knowledge of theories, principles, and concepts typically acquired through completion of a Bachelor's degree in Biology or a closely related field and 2 years of experience or four or more years of experience working in an aquaculture environment. Academic training in fish biology, aquaculture, or aquatic ecology is highly preferred.
The analytical skills to resolve highly complex problems requiring the application of scientific or technical principles, theories and concepts and indepth, crossfunctional experiencedbased knowledge.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to interface effectively with scientific staff, ARP staff, hospital engineering, and service/equipment vendors.
